When to Pick from the Discard Pile

The open card is public. Taking it tells the table what you need. Take it when it closes a pure sequence or a set you already hold. Otherwise draw closed.

Good take

You hold 5-6 of spades and 7 of spades hits the discard. That is a pure-sequence gift. Take it.

Bad take

A king you 'might' set later. It is 10 points if someone declares. Closed is safer. Throw high cards also means do not pick them without a home.

Bait

Sometimes the open card is a trap the opponent wants you to touch. If it does not finish a group this turn, leave it.
